He would simply tell people, for example, in the
world of literature, that one of the things that
they ought to stop doing is thinking of the English
language as being the whole of the 19th approach
to English language, and he would start talking
about some of the theories that were being
generated in some of the studies by James Joyce,
for example. And he would quote Finnegans Wake ,
which of course meant nothing to anyone. He
