  3. they ought to stop doing is thinking of the English 
  4. language as being the whole of the 19th approach 
  5. to English language, and he would start talking 
  6. about some of the theories that were being 
  7. generated in some of the studies by James Joyce, 
  8. for example. And he would quote Finnegans Wake , 
  9. which of course meant nothing to anyone. He 
  10. would say, ‚ÄúWell, isn‚Äôt that interesting. You‚Äôre 
  11. teaching literature and you have all these biases 
  12. against what I‚Äôm saying but the greatest writer of 
  13. the 20th century could not be understood by you 
  14. and your methods of understanding English
